Choosing a treatment

If you're unsure of which bodywork modality will be best for you, then we recommend that you begin with Therapeutic Massage. After Integrative Massage it's our most popular. A one-hour treatment allows your therapist enough time to assess your tension pattern, help you to begin letting go of your pain, and restore a sense of ease to your mind & body. For anyone who works out with heavy weights or if you just prefer even more penetrating pressure we now offer Therapeutic Massage w/extra pressure.

FYI If your pain or stiffness seems confined to a specific area [ie. low back, neck & shoulders, calves & feet, forearms, etc.] a 45-minute treatment may be adequate for your initial session. However, back pain issues often encompass areas extending either up into the shoulder, neck and head areas or down into the hip, thigh and calf areas. SUGGESTION: If you have been experiencing back pain for more than one month we recommend that you schedule 90 minutes of Integrative Bodywork with either Richard or Bob for your initial session in order to properly assess your condition and begin treatment.

Symtoms and treatments:

Know someone who is dealing with cancer?

People in all phases of the journey through cancer can benefit from healing touch and carefully tailored massage therapy. Oncology massage can help manage symptoms and side effects of cancer and cancer treatment, including pain, nausea, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety and depression.  Most of all, oncology massage is a nurturing experience designed to restore your sense of positive touch and an integrated body which helps encourage your body’s healing process. There are only a few instances where touch is contraindicated for a cancer patient, but Susannah will work with you and your doctor to learn exactly what is the right level of massage for you at any point during your treatment and recovery.

Lacking energy lately?

Fatigue is often a symptom of: dealing with way too much stress, past trauma, exhaustion - both physically and mentally, anxiety, depression, an energy imbalance, a structural imbalance, chronic pain, poor nutrition, dehydration and more. To counteract the effects of stress, and re-balance your systems we suggest you try Abhyanga Massage, Thai Bodywork/Massage, Matrix Energetics or Acupuncture.

Proactive about your health?

Health and well-beingness can no longer be taken for granted. We live in an era where life-threatening illnesses and disease (such as Diabetes and Asthma) are taking an increasing toll on our bodies. Our immune systems have become compromised from the low-nutritional value of the food we eat and from all of the unhealthy food additives and toxic medications we take daily.

In addition to eating organic whole foods and eliminating all processed foodstuff and soft drinks containing artificial sweetners and/or high-fructose corn syrup from your diet you might consider any number of ways of restoring harmony and balance to your mind-body-emotions. Acupuncture is a great way to begin your transition away from dis-ease. Also, consider increasing your daily intake of purified non-tap water to help your body flush out toxins and replenish.

Female health issues?

We are extremely fortunate to have such talented and knowledgeable staff. Since some health issues may be a result of visceral restrictions due to age, surgeries, and stress we are fortunate to be able to offer Acupuncture to address your challenging health issues.

Expecting a baby?

Congratulations! We share in your anticipated joy. However, being pregnant can be very stressful - both physically and emotionally. Since opening our office we have performed more than 800 prenatal massages. Our professionally-trained staff is prepared to assist you throughout the full term of your pregnancy with our Prenatal Massage. At Massage Therapy Works we are very fortunate to have on our staff someone who has had advanced training plus years of experience. Kathleen’s knowledge and experience will both empower and comfort you as you proceed along in preparation for that incredible day ahead.

Preparing for an athletic event?

Let our professional staff of bodyworkers help you to tune-up your muscles. Having relaxed, long, limber muscles is critical for optimal performance. Our Sports Massage is designed to maximize your range of motion, and eliminate (or minimize) unnecessary restrictive tension. Take advantage of Patience’s remarkable intuitive & manual skills.  Having been trained to work on U.S. Olympian athletes she has the knowledge and skills to optimize your body’s performance. As an adjunct therapy Neuromuscular Massage is amazingly effective for changing (repatterning) a body’s sense of itself. The focus here is on restoring a sense of balance and ease of movement.

If you’ve been noticing some restriction in your range of motion, i.e. shoulder or hip, then you might consider the benefit of having a Spinal Reflex Analysis to have that soft-tissue strain resolved and your r.o.m. maximized for optimal performance.

Sports injury

Boston surely loves its sports! Our clientele consists of: runners, triathletes, cyclists, rowers, dancers, martial artists, weekend soccer players, weekend softball players, professional ice skaters, tennis players, hockey players, swimmers, skiiers, Mtn. bikers, kayakers, snowborders, fitness instructors and more.

Soft-tissue (muscle, tendon, ligament, and connective tissue) strains are quite commmon among athletes and can be quite painful, even debilitating at times. Our most successful approach is to first assess the nature of the injury, i.e. Rehab Motherapy and Spinal Reflex Analysis, and then using various massage techniques restore a sense of ease to that area of imbalance. For acute injuries we recommend one of the following modalities: Integrative Massage, Neuromuscular Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, or Chinese Massage. In the likely event that your shoulder, hip, knee or ankle joint is in pain due to chronic inflamation you might consider Acupuncture.

Headache

Headaches are becoming quite common in the workplace where computers are in constant use and individual postures are compromised with elevated shoulders and outreaching arms. Headaches & migraines, jaw tension (TMJD), and post-whiplash issues are often alleviated, if not entirely resolved, with our Integrative Bodywork and/ or CranioSacral Therapy and/ or Rehab Myotherapy. Also consider Acupuncture if life has you feeling overwhelmed and out-of-balance.

Back pain

Back pain is extremely common and can often persist for months, and the cause(s) sometimes can seem elusive when a specific event can not be recalled. Our approach to helping resolve your specific issue depends much upon your current condition and past history. Our Therapeutic Massage will help begin the healing process. Integrative Massage, involving a more comprehensive and inclusive approach, will be even more effective. Rehab Motherapy, Acupuncture, and Chinese Massage - working at even deeper levels - are our most reliable healing therapies when a significant muscle strain has resulted in chronic pain due to stagnant qi (energy). Often times a structural imbalance (poor posture) is the culprit (if not major contributor). For a long-term solution consider Structural Integration. Please note that several sessions are often required to correct structural imbalances.

Stress

You don’t have to have an injury to benefit from one of our massages or bodywork sessions. Try either our Therapeutic massage or one of our new Ayurvedic massages - any one of these three modalities can help restore a renewed sense of calm after a frantic day (or week). For variety, we also suggest Thai bodywork/ massage or Acupuncture (similar to Shiatsu). When the cause of stress is partly emotional then you might consider having your therapist spend some time massaging your stomach region - that’s where we hold onto feelings and thoughts which we really prefer not to deal with yet.

"I have had many mediocre massages in the Boston area, but I have finally found my go-to spot for undoing the damage I inflict on my body as a result of an active lifestyle. The whole session was incredible from start to finish - we talked in the beginning about what was bothering me (my right lat, hamstrings, some neck tension) and she spent the entire 40 minutes working the kinks and lactic acid and PAIN out of each area and even incorporated some intergative techniques."
