{4/10/10} "I booked an hour-long relaxing massage with Andrea, and would do so in a heartbeat. The facility is small and comfortable, and the staff clearly have a lot of comradarie. What really impressed me is their presence on the web. They have an easy to use online reservation form, email confirmation and an email asking for a review in my inbox just after I'd left. These people know how to make online media work for them! - S.S. (N. Dartmouth)
{3/31/10} "I am training for my first Boston Marathon and just finished the last long run of 20 miles. After the run I was feeling some soreness in my legs and knee and decided it was time to get a massage to take away some of the stiffness in my hamstrings and calves.
I saw that Massage Therapy Works was having a discount for Boston marathon runners and decided to book an appointment with Richard because I had seen such great reviews from his clients. They were not lying, this guy is great and was truly helpful to me in getting me back on the road for my tapering for the marathon. When I came in to see Richard, I was having a lot of pain on the outside of my left knee.
Richard noticed immediately that I was putting my weight on the other leg to alieviate the pressure on the sore knee.
I really can not say enough about how impressed I was with Richard. He not only took the time to tell me what my problems were, but also showed me exercises to stretch before I run. Richard was brutally honest with me about my lack of flexibility and I appreciated his frankness. Richard did some deep tissue work on my legs that was very painful at times, but definitely needed.
This was exactly the kind of massage I was looking for when I made the appointment. I left the office with no pain in my knee and my legs felt a lot better. On my run that day I could not believe the difference the massage had on me. Richard is awesome and I look forward to my next appointment. I know this is going to help me run the Boston Marathon with a smile on my face.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a massage." - Ray H. (Jamaica Plain)
{3/31/10} "I always forget to go get massages until I can't move something...at all....like my neck..or my whole back...just as an example. Kris at MTW has remobilized me on more than one occasion. She's like the oooiiil caaaan to my tin man and I'm so glad to have found her.
She's thorough, personable, and I get the impression that she matches her level of chatty to your level of chatty as best she can...I'm kinda chatty. I like her electro-chant combo music, the heated table pad, and (although I know she can't take credit for the architecture) the curtained skylights overhead. It's a great atmosphere in which to have my muscles cajoled, begged, and otherwise coaxed out of whatever funk they happen to presently be in. If I weren't in so much pain, I'd probably just fall right asleep.
They're a little pricier than your average rub-down-joint but they have always made it worth my while!" - Kelly G. (Boston)
{3/29/10} "Richard is simply amazing. I went to him because I was having problems with my Achilles during my training for the Boston Marathon, and I had heard that tight calves are often partially responsible for Achilles problems.
I have had sports massage done over a dozen times, but never like what I got from Richard. There is massage, and then there is deep tissue massage.
For starters. It hurt. like a mf-ing beast. For an hour, I muffled grunts and yelps of pain as he worked his way through the tightness in my calves and legs. The was not relax-the-mind massage, this was excruciating, physical therapy push your pain buttons kind of massage. Yet, as soon as I got home, I booked another appointment for a week later to get more of it. Why?
Well, the difference was immediate. After the work was done, I had gained a ridiculous amount of flexibility in my calves. I had no idea that they could move like that. Even though I was sore for an entire day afterwords, it was totally worth the new found range of motion. The next day, I found myself working less hard on my training run - my heartrate had dropped by 3 bpm running at my general aerobic pace, and I found I could run faster with the same level of effort. I have had massage that has felt good, but nothing that has dramatically changed the way I feel and move. This was revelatory for me - deep-tissue massage could actually change the body in a way that was far beyond what I could accomplish with regular stretching.
The other factor was that I arrived 20 minutes late -- a red-line train broke down and I got stuck at Harvard Square for 30 minutes. Some places booking appoints can get a bit snarky when these kinds of things happen, even when they're out of the person's control, but this is understandable given how it messes up everyone else's schedule. At MTW, they took it all in stride with a smile and managed to work in a full-length treatment anyway.
Fast-forward to today, my 2nd appointment with Richard. This time, my glutes, my hams, and my quads. Boy, I had no idea how tight my quads were until he started digging in. The pain from week 1 was nothing compared to this. I let out a couple of involuntary "ok ok ouch"-es. It was killing me. For a while, it was okay. He told me to go to that tranquil spot. OK, good, beach on Kauai, lapping waves, nice trade winds breeze, things going well. But inevitably he'd work into a trouble spot & the mental image would turn into Oh shit shark jumped out of the water & is now chewing on my leg please mr shark stop biting me. The impact was amazing though. Not just flexibility, but strength in my ITB areas. The difference was very noticeable. Clearly, the hip exercises I got out of Runner's World weren't doing that much good for ITB strength -- and 20 minutes of front leg work did what 20 weeks of hip strengthening leg lifts couldn't do.
ok, ok, the pain is gone now and I'm set to book my third appointment with him for a week before the race. While the massage was happening, I thought to myself what the hell am I doing & I'm not doing this again. But it was just a little pain, and it ended soon enough... and once the pain had cleared, it was so amazingly worth it.
I would give this place & Richard 6 stars if I could. And I'm reluctant to even mention his name because I don't want it to get harder to book time with him in the future!!" - Vince T. (Cambridge)
{3/22/10} "This place renews life. I have been pain-free for the past 1 1/2 months. I have been getting deep tissue massage from Andrea on my right shoulder. I thought I had an injury. Come to find out I have two huge knots in my back. One under my right shoulder blade and one at my right clavicle. Once Andrea worked these areas my shoulder pain disappeared. Now I have had this pain going on over a year. It is incredible to have no pain. Love Andrea, this week I asked her to decrease the pressure during the massage and WOW!! she did it. I have been to other places and none are as good as this place. The atmosphere, once you walk in the door, is instant relaxation. I'd love to hang out in there after my massage to soak up the positive energy. Try this place out if you are having trouble finding a good massage therapist." - Mary G. (Somerville)
{3/17/10} "I had a massage tonight with Cara. They have a $59 special for one hour with their newest massage therapists. She was excellent! Clearly very knowledgeable, asked all the right questions. The pressure she used was perfect, and I was very, very stiff. I feel so, so much better after my massage. And I totally recommend Cara! Thanks!" - Phoebe K. (Cambridge)
{3/17/10} "I came in with a severe headache that lasted for the past two weeks with eye pain and droopiness - I am a medical student and had the best care possible from several doctors as well as had head imaging done. It was not until I had my massage with Kris that my headache and eye pain resolved. It was unmistakably a correlation - the night I came in to see her I was in tremendous pain. The next morning I felt back to my usual self, that which had not been the case for the past 2 weeks. Thanks Kris!" - Ashiyana N. (Cambridge)
{3/14/10} "I just had a fantastic deep tissue massage here with Kris. You really get the full experience here - peaceful music, zen decor, heated cushy massage table, nice smelling oils, etc. I came in with high expectations, having checked out their website, and was not disappointed. Kris was very knowledgeable and listened to what I needed. She focused on the muscles I needed help on, and was very professional and relaxing. Highly recommended, these guys have it figured out. Price was normal for a high-quality massage place like this." - Miles R. (Somerville)
{3/10/10} "I have been a regular client of Bob's for the last three years. I run marathons. I get the deep tissue massage once a month and I would definitely recommend it to any serious runner. Bob has helped me get rid of some of my running injuries and also helped me from getting new ones. I would not go anywhere else for a massage!" - Stephanie H. (Somerville)
{3/8/10} "I would say that I have had a lot of experience over the last 6 -7 years with massage - some good, some not so much! I will say that my experience at Massage Therapy Works is among the best I have had. Richard simply rocks!!! I am not one of those people that lays there quietly during a massage, I like to have conversation....mainly because I don't go there to relax. I got there to get deep work done as result of chronic pain - he is...in a word...brilliant! I have now been a regular client since last May with no intention of changing. I highly recommend MTW to anyone. I will say that he hires people that are good and they must keep up on their skills! I really treasure this place!! Only downfall....parking is not the best, but since I have resident sticker it is not longer a problem." - Aimee G. (Somerville)
{3/2/10} "My massage with Cara was fantastic! And I had Patience awhile ago and she was amazing as well. (I not on the social network sites, but i tell all my friends in the area about you!) - Amanda H. (Somerville)
{3/1/10} "I just came back from visiting Massage Therapy Works for the first time (and my first massage) and it was AMAZING! I have now come to the conclusion that happy people have massages. That must be how it's done.
I have no lingering health issues, just lots of tension and pain resulting from a highly stressful, highly active job, so I signed up for the $49.95 special (available with one of the two new to the location masseuses) and I had Cara. First off, booking online through their website was very easy, and they sent me reminders via text and email!
I arrived unsure what to expect, but very quickly I felt right at home. Cara guided me through the process since it was my first massage, and I was never uncomfortable. Actually I was quite the opposite. Butter melting on the table.
Cara was friend, very chill, and was extremely courteous. She checked in with me once in a while to make sure I was comfortable, and she solved every little ailment I came in with. If your looking for someone to book with, CHOOSE HER! I will definately be back for my second massage next month, and a third massage the month after, and so on and so forth....
Also when you do stop in (especially if you're using a special rate or coupon) be sure to tip generously. I always give at least 20 - 30% for great work. Service jobs are rough, and it lets them know you appreciate the care they are putting into it. It actually is an amazing value, and if I was charged twice as much next time I would still return.
(And totally disregard the old reviews regarding the atmosphere. It's completely relaxing and cozy as mentioned previously. No 70's decor here.)" - Ryan L. (Somerville)
{2/26/10} "I just had a massage with Andrea - it was perfect - exactly what I needed after packing-moving-unpacking for the past two weeks." - Liz R. (Brookline MA)
{2/25/10} "I just had a Relaxation Massage here with Kathleen. I'm new to the area but not massage. It was 75 minutes of pure heaven. Kathleen really payed attention to my problem areas. I recommend Massage Therapy Works and Kathleen to everyone. I will definitely be a repeat customer." - Kim W. (Cambridge MA)
{2/23/10} "I came up from NYC to visit family, and decided that, as a reward for quitting my uber-stressful job, I'd get a good massage. Thanks to you Yelpers, and the Yelp-advertised Super Special Special, I got a nice, thorough massage from Buki. I'll definitely go again the next time I come up to Boston." - Dee P. (Brooklyn NY)
{2/22/10} "I arrived in pain and left after having had the most unexpected, longer-than-usual integrative bodywork massage I never knew existed. Richard was incredible--informative, careful but strong, positive--and ultimately, helped me walk out feeling as though my joints were fluid instead of stiff and painful--and I also had energy! I am definitely going back." - Kim R. (Jamaica Plain)
{2/22/10} "I just want to take the time to say that Massage Therapy Works is an amazing place. I was very pleased and impressed by the first massage I received by Richard and the second one I received by Natalia. Both were very helpful, professional and stress-relieving. I have recommended MTW to many people already and will continue to do so. I will also continue to come back. The atmosphere in the waiting room is also very soothing, warm, and inviting. Thank you for a great experience. This is the best place I have ever received massages and I would never go elsewhere.":) - Lynne D. (Jamaica Plain)
{2/03/10} "Very happy! Massage Therapy Works offers a student discount (dollar-a-minute) which makes it (at least for me) one of the most affordable places in town where I don't have to sacrifice on service to get the kind of treatment I need. I carry a ton of stress in my shoulders and neck and Jared really helped me get all that out. Plus, he taught me some new stretches I hadn't known about before to help prevent the tension from forming between visits. Thanks, Jared!" - Holly W. (Cambridge MA)
{2/2/10} "Always a great massage. The therapists [Patience] know how to give a deep tissue massage (not just the pressure points that some places call deep tissue)." - Linda W. (Boston)
{1/29/10} "I was browsing Yelp last week for a new and reasonably-priced place to get a massage and noticed that MTW had great reviews, so I made an appointment to try their $49 january special (one hour relaxation massage). There's plenty of public parking around this section of Davis Square, so I easily found a metered space. The building that MTW is in isn't the most exciting looking place from the outside, but the waiting area inside the studio is very calming and nicely decorated--nice paintings, deep-colored woods, soothing music, etc. My appointment was with Cara, and let me tell you, this massage was DEFINITELY relaxing. She was really nice and did a great job easing out all the kinks in my back. She checked in several times during the treatment to see if the level of pressure/style was working for me, but I appreciated that she otherwise let me zone out and listen to the ambient celtic music she had playing. The room the massage was in was a bit small, but very clean and nicely decorated. Cara gave me a fantastic massage and I left MTW feeling very relaxed and with absolutely no neck or back pain. I would definitely come back here again, and I think that their student ID/morning specials make it a reasonably priced place to go." - Blue T. (Brookline)
{1/24/10} "I often regard massage as an extravagance...but Jared proved to me that it can be worth every penny. I had been suffering with annoying pains in my neck, shoulders and back...but I can definitely say that there was a significant reduction in pain after Jared's integrative massage. My thanks for a job well done!" - Laura G. (Suffolk University)
{1/11/10} "Our appointment started out on a bit of a rough note... We got a call in the morning with the news that our massage specialist was out sick. However they did everything they could to help with the situation, and they eventually called us back to let us know that the owner [Richard Green] was going to come in and take care of us.
Of course we would have understood if they had to cancel on us. It's flu season, and we all know there's no good in getting a massage from a sick person anyways. The point is they took care of us, above and beyond what was required...
On to the massage itself - we actually signed up for a couples massage class (my christmas present to my girlfriend) And it was great! Highly recommended. Each of us got a basic massage to start, while the person not on the table watched. Afterwards we moved on to the class part. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. We learned a lot, we had fun, and we got great massages!
Not only did we learn how to give each other basic massages, but he also taught us special things that would help us individually. My girlfriend was taught how to take care of my bad back, and I learned some tricks to help her migraines." - Chris H. (Glastonbury, CT)
{1/07/10} "Something weird just happened to me.
About 20 minutes after my
most recent appointment, I sneezed... and it didn't hurt! I haven't
had a pain-free sneeze in about a decade.
Thank you, Jared!" - Barry B. (Somerville)
{1/05/10} "When I arrived I was greeted warmly by my therapist-to-be, Kris. After completing some paperwork and discussing what form of therapy would be best for me, she positioned me on the comfy table and began the massage. She worked deeply on my neck, shoulders, and back, all areas where my muscles are chronically tight. I could immediately feel the release of tension muscle by muscle. She also massaged my gluteas muscle that I told her I had pulled earlier in the day. The entire massage lasted one hour, which was the most enjoyable, relaxing, and productive 60 minutes I have spent in a long time. As I walked down the street afterward my entire upper back and neck felt Ioose and the achiness was gone. And the pain from the pulled muscle was much less bothersome.
I would highly recommend Kris for her warm, but professional presense, her obvious care and attention to my personal needs and requests, and her incredible high level of skill as a massage therapist." - Margaret E. (Somerville)
{1/01/10} "Today was my first visit to Massage Therapy Works, and it won't be my last! First of all, I was glad to see that I could make an appointment online really easily, and thrilled that there was an opening this afternoon. I had a massage with body work from Richard, who was just fantastic. He first assessed the structure of my body and figured out where the issues were and what needed to be done. Then he went to work and worked wonders to loosen up tight spots and restore range of motion I didn't even know I had lost. I felt like I had a new body when I was done. Richard gave me several exercises to do to help with some especially difficult areas and even gave me a recommendation for a chair that will be beneficial to me as someone who spends a lot of time working on a computer.
The staff were courteous and warm and greeted me with a smile and offered me water. It felt really good just being there. And Richard combines great professionalism, experience, and knowledge of the body with great personal warmth and genuine caring for what ails me. He helped my body as well as my soul. I plan on going back for more and would recommend Massage Therapy Works to anyone interested in having a body that works better and feels better." - Judy S. (Medford)
{12/22/09} "I liked MTW and would recommend it. Nice calm and comfortable atmosphere that fits Davis Square, but definitely not a luxurious, upscale pampering vibe. Krista did a great job of asking my preferences, and was very responsive when I asked for more or less pressure. After the session she took the time to give me a few tips on what I could do on my own to deal with a few problem areas in my neck/shoulders." - Gilliam M. (Melrose)
{12/21/09} "Between being on my feet for 8 to 12 hours a day, leaning over a lot, carrying heavy items, and having a disorder that causes my back and neck to spasm often, I need massages on a pretty regular basis in order to remain comfortable.
I went in the other night, and was greeted by a super courteous and friendly staff. Apparently I came in a little later than their appointments usually run, but Jared took me in anyway. He said "I could tell you were in pain."
The massage itself was the best I'd ever received (Sorry Richard!), and he has responsive to both my body and my attitude.
It's good to have a massage therapist who is responsive but not chatty, and who actually cares about massaging my back, and not balancing my chi or realigning my chackra or whatever.
Friendly, professional, and just an all around great experience."
- Barry B. (Somerville)
{12/17/09} "I had Krista Cardelicchio, and she was so amazing. Like, really, it was amazing. I've had about four massages so far from different people, and Krista was by far the best. It's like she could read my mind. Whatever she was doing to my shoulders was pretty much better than sex. Besides that, both the lobby and the massage rooms here are very calming. - Laura C. (Boston)
{12/13/09} "Massage Therapy Work's owner, Richard, was a pleasure to work with. As a student at Simmons College, I contacted him in regards to holding a "Massage Night" the week before finals within the dorms. After much discussion of rate/# of masseuses/length....ect.. . we were able to set a date and prepare for the event.
He brought himself and three other therapists for three hours this past thursday evening, and they did around 70 massages total! It was an awesome event within our dorm, and although I wish everyone could have had an hour massage each, it was great to see so many people SO relaxed. I could not have asked for this event to go any smoother. Thanks to Richard, Jared, Natalia, and Cara for all of their hard work...literally.
I will be having a proper massage there soon, and am sure I'll "re-review". They are awesome people that truly care about you.
I would recommend hiring them for any kind of event whether it be a corporate or personal party. They are friendly people who know what they're doing!
Thank you again!" - Jackie (Boston)
{11/23/2009} "I am EXTREMELY happy with this place. With a history of neck and back problems that are muscle related, and playing ice hockey numerous times a week, I decided that if I didn't start to get help for it soon, it would only get worse. I decided to take advantage of a good deal they had if you tried out one of their new therapists.
Jared was really really good. He applied a good amount of pressure and was able to find the problem spots and take care of them. He spoke only when he needed to explain something but was also completely willing to talk when I wanted to. It was extremely reasonably priced and very convenient. The place had a very calm and soothing feel to it as well.
I am excited to go back. " - Mark S. (Middlesex MA)
{11/23/2009} "Went for deep-tissue massage on Friday and was very impressed. I got the deal currently advertised and though it didn't specifically stipulate that deep tissue massage was included, Jared said he would include it for me as he is relatively new and didn't want to charge full whack for something he was not quite as experienced at.
I went in with a really painful left hip, however once the massage was underway, it was apparent that my sacrum and ITB was also really really tight as were my calves and the sides of my shins. Suffice it to say it was not the most painless massage ever, but that is exactly as to be expected when having deep tissue massage and it was way less painful than some I have had! Jared listened to when it was becoming too sore and was careful not to overwork the muscles, this resulted in very little residual pain the next day and no bruising whatsoever.
We did run over quite a bit, but I guess that we both underestimated how much work needed done and also with Jared being less experienced meant that he was a bit less quick. He was however, really cool about it and wasn't going to charge me. Instead, I asked him to finish off the rest of the second hour and paid him for both hours - he had put in such a good job and the rate was so reasonable that I was happy to continue the second hour for him to work a bit on my back and shoulders.
All in all a great experience - I would certainly go back there again and would have no hesitation in asking for Jared. I possibly would also like to try some of the more experienced massage therapists who might have more techniques and ideas, but I cannot fault the service I had on Friday - a definite place to try when you ache all over!" - Alison K (Boston)
Richard is strong and gentle, very knowledgeable about the body and how to address whatever might ail you, and I always leave feeling wonderfully taken care of, relaxed, and rejuvenated. He is an incredible healer.
My only problem is that I STILL don't get to go as often as I would like!"
- Judy W (North Cambridge)
{10/08/09} "My massage was incredible and I am very grateful to Borisfor his help. He, and apparently the whole place, is a marvel. I will tell my friends so." -Rachel B.
{9/23/2009} "I've been to many massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, osteopaths, orthopedic doctors, etc for back pain and Bob is the first one to actual find a way to alleviate it. I was looking for someone who could dig into the knots in my back and not only did he do that and not waste time on my arms and legs, but he used a variety of bodywork techniques to realign my hips and sacroiliac joints. I definitely wouldn't call it a relaxing experience because he was working on adhered tissues and tendons, which in general doesn't feel good when they're worked on, but it was effective and exactly what I was looking for! I would recommend Bob to anyone who really wants pain relief. Personally I think the decor is lovely, but I'm also more interested in outcome than sheet color! -Tina W. (Maynard)
{9/11/09} There's not much else to add to what others have already said. All I can do is 100% agree with them. In short, Richard is amazing. He takes the time to explain what he's done, why, and the benefits. In addition, he'll also take the time to give you tips on how best to prevent the issue from reoccurring.
I also have friends who also go to MTW and they have only positive things to say about the other therapists. Highly recommended! - Calvin K (Somerville)
{9/3/2009} "I only have one previous massage experience to draw reference from, but this place is fantastic. Davis Square can be a busy place and unless you have an eye-catching storefront, you're bound to get lost in the bustle. If I hadn't found this place in a Google search, I would never have uncovered this hidden gem.
The nature of my job involves a lot of repetitive motions and I end up with a lot of upper back pain and fatigue. So, I got a "therapeutic massage with extra deep pressure" since I crave that "good pain" from Kathleen. She was fantastic. She spent plenty of time trying to relieve my pain and tightness and was constantly checking in and adjusting pressure if necessary (it was usually perfectly deep and painful). She also sat down with me both before and after the massage session identifying problems and going over solutions. I could immediately tell that her understanding of massage techniques and the human body was very extensive. I left feeling relaxed and somewhat loosened up in my upper back, but obviously one massage isn't going to magically cure my pain. I liked this place so much, in fact, that I ended up purchasing a set of 3 one hour massage sessions for the amazingly affordable price of $228. That's another thing about this place...the pricing is great for the quality of massage. Definitely check their website for discounts and specials too.
The suite is in sort of an office building and is kind of small, but very relaxing upon walking in. The lights are dim and the space is very welcoming and thoughtfully decorated. There are (I think) only 3 massage rooms and the bathroom is way the hell down the hall, but that's fine. It was very very clean and the staff is extremely helpful and friendly. There are also quite a few therapists and each has his/her bio on the website, along with their massage specialties and interests. I had no trouble booking an appointment, either, considering I did it the day before.
I can't say enough good things about this place if you're in need of some release and relaxation." - C. Z. (Boston)
{8/29/2009} "I had my first appointment for a therapeutic massage withBoris who was absolutely terrific! He was kind, sensitive and truly professional. I came in with limited movement of my right arm due to shoulder pain and after the massage the mobility in my arm increased significantly. Boris also sent me home with some exercise to do. Enjoy a fantastic experience and go to Massage Therapy Works!!" -Carol B. (Winchester)
{8/26/2009} "I have been to Massage Therapy Works many times and can highly recommend it. The staff is professional and knowledgable. My last massage was with Boris and I found him to be a great massage therapist, with great knowledge of muscle groups. He also incorporated some exercises for me to continue after the massage. I highly recommend this establishment!!!" -Karin A. (Somerville)
{8/23/2009} "I just had an amazing massage by Patience at MTW. I climbed a mountain in NH the day before and needless to say I was in need of some repair. Patience suggested i try "integrative massage" and I'm glad she did. After the 1-hr session i was climbing flights of stairs like a champ! Thanks again Patience, ill be back after the next mountain!" -Jared G. (No. Providence RI)
#34 {8/22/2009} "Best massage ever. Bob was amazing at getting the knots out and I plan to go again. Fabulous and way better than a wimpy spa massage. I had just run a half marathon and was sore and he helped tremendously." -Renee B. (Bedford)
#33 "Emily helps me so much. I am a freelance writer and currently in graduate school for writing, so I spend a lot of time at the computer, which is not the best position to be in for hours at a time, day in and day out. But Emily’s massage therapy has been invaluable. Also, since our heads and hearts and bodies are all connected, Emily’s intuitive bodywork is, pardon the pun, head and shoulders above any massage therapy I’ve had in the past. We store a lot of baggage (physical and emotional) in our muscles and Emily has helped work a lot of that out. I feel like she helps me function better and ultimately enjoy my life more. That’s why Emily is the one person who I have consistently gone to for massage therapy for a long time. She is exactly what I was looking for when I decided to make massage therapy a regular part of my overall health regimen for preventing avoidable health problems in the future. And it also helps make me a better me. Thanks so much, Emily!" - Jenn Sutkowski
#32 {8/22/09} Best massage ever. Bob was amazing at getting the knots out and I plan to go again. Fabulous and way better than a wimpy spa massage. I had just run a half marathon and was sore and he helped tremendously.
Update: went today and I had a massage by Richard and it was again an amazing experience. Perhaps massage is the wrong word as it was really more bodywork.
These guys know how the body works and if you have areas that you need loosened up or worked, they will make you feel like a new person. If you are looking to have a day spa experience, I am not sure this is the place for you. I have wasted so much money getting a crappy massage in a beautiful spa that I am so thankful I have found a place finally that is worth the time and money!" - Renee B (Bedford)
#31 {8/19/2009} "I have had many massages over the years at high end spas in some of the world's finest resorts, but they just don't compare to the knowledge, service and expertise of the folks at Massage Therapy Works. I've been going to Bob for a few years now and he is truly AMAZING! My aches and pains disappear after a visit with him. I seriously strained my back and could barely stand up straight this morning, but I walked out of my session with Bob this afternoon a new woman! Everyone at MTW is kind and helpful and you leave not just feeling relaxed, but with the knowledge to help you improve your posture and avoid back trouble in the future. Fantastic!" -Julia C. (Somerville)
#30 {8/14/2009} "I just had a "therapeutic massage" with Boris, and it was fantastic. He has incredibly powerful and very smart hands, and I've never had a deep massage like that before in my life.
But there was more! At the end, rather than saying "Come back in a few weeks," Boris gave me two exercises to do regularly at home to deal with my chronic bad posture, sending me back into my pain-inducing life WITH TOOLS to reduce my muscle tightening, improve my posture, and the knowledge to understand what had happened to me in the first place. Thank you, Boris and Massage Therapy Works, Inc.!" -Mark S. (Boston)
#29 {8/13/2009} "I just had a great massage with Richard. He spend a lot of time evaluating my posture, and was generous with tips [suggestions]. Will come back again!
ps. If you are in a rush, you should say so in advance; my session lasted half an hour longer than I expected, maybe because it was my first time, but I am not complaining, it was great." - Vik A. (Middlesex)
#27 {7/21/09} I discovered massage 12 years ago when I was pregnant. It's one of those things that you don't know you need and how good it can be until you've experienced it. During these 12 years I have turned to bodywork when I am in pain or as an occasional treat. I have found relief from sciatica during pregnancy, increased my range of motion after a shoulder injury and worked out uncomfortable knots in my neck, shoulders and back. I have been coming to MTW for years and they are absolutely the BEST! If I'm out of town and can't get to MTW I hesitate to see anyone else because half the time I am disappointed.
I have had most of my sessions with Richard but everyone I've seen has been excellent. Richard listens carefully to your words and your body; he is a healer and an educator. He tries to find out what you are doing that is causing your pain and offers suggestions and stretches to avoid or alleviate it.
Last night my husband and I spent time with Richard in a massage instruction session for couples. My husband has never been interested in getting a professional massage but enjoys giving me massage so he agreed to go for my birthday. We learned a lot, it was well worth it. Richard knows my trouble spots so he was able to show my husband techniques I could not explain or demonstrate. Likewise I learned techniques that are not intuitive and will make it easier to give my husband a beneficial massage without causing myself pain or exhaustion.
Finally, I love the easy to use on-line appointment system. I often take advantage of their 40-min weekday morning specials. It is a great way to give MTW a try or work on a specific area. - D.M. (Somerville)
#26 {7/10/2009} "I had a fantastic massage with Boris at Massage Therapy Works. I went in with tons of knots and kinks in my neck, shoulders, and back, and walked out with none! Boris has a warm, friendly manner and really delivered on the extra pressure. ($10 extra). I have also great massages from Bob and Richard in the past." -Jenny B. (Somerville)
#25 {6/25/2009} "I've had three massages there so far. Most recently this morning. With the early special, it's all three. All three? Good, fast and cheap! The massage was wonderful - therapeutic to help heal from and prepare for sports. Fast - I had had no appointment, but they called back promptly and made an appointment at a convenient time. Cheap - reasonable price every day, in the morning they have a special $49/40min. Dell and Boris have been great." -Michael H. (Cambridge)
#24 {6/24/2009} "I have never experienced a better massage in my life. I recommend getting the therapeutic with extra pressure from Boris, he is amazing!" -Melanie J. (Somerville)
#22 {6/21/2009} "My girlfriend raved about MTW to me so when my back started acting up again, i decided to give it a shot. i was looking for a deep tissue massage and got paired up with Boris Castanon, and it turned out to be THE best body work i have ever had. Boris tailored his approach to my specific needs and over the course of the 4 sessions i had with him, he continued to adjust his recommendations and his approach based on how my body was responding. while your basic relaxation massage certainly has it's benefits, i have found that it has never provided me with more than temporary relief. Boris' diverse educational background - from deep tissue muscular specific massage, myofascial and scar release to orthopedic massage - enabled him to not only help provide me with immediate relief but he also succeeded in helping me keep my issues at bay indefinitely. after our last session, he went the extra mile and sent me off with some printed materials containing stretches and exercises to help me stay healthy. i have kept up the regimen he suggested and it has been over a month since my last session with him and i haven't even had the slightest hint of a relapse. thank you Boris and thank you MTW!" -Frank M. (Somerville)
#21 {6/17/2009} "I have been a satisfied client of the many excellent bodywork practitioners at Massage Therapy Works for many years. Each and every experience, Deep Tissue for 90 minutes, Rolfing for 30 minutes, therapeutic, and sports specific treatments have always been well done. Preparatory consultation in private, quiet, attractive workrooms has been detailed and professional first time and every succeeding time. While I've only seen some practitioners once or twice, it's typically scheduling that prevents us from meeting more often, not incompatibility in any regard. I have maintained regular regimens with several individual practitioners over years, and while scheduling changes sometimes have made this impossible to continue, I have always foundmy confidence that capable professionals are available instead is justified.
For example, Most recently I have embarked on a series of deep tissue massage treatments with specific focus related to a sports injury. I've seen Kris Quiñones twice now and have been very favorably impressed with both her skill and her level of knowledge and direct experience in the anatomy of my injury and the challenges of my recovery. I only started with Kris because the practioner I have been seeing most regularly, Bob Nemeth, wasn't available when I had time and wanted to get started. I'm certain my experience with Bob would have been as excellent as always, which is why it's no surprise he's pretty solidly booked well in advance. I took the recommendation of the practitioner on phone duty about which of several others available when I wanted to come in to see, and she has proven to be an excellent diagnostician and thoughtful in terms of matching provider skills to client needs.
I, too, have had many different experiences, nationally and internationally, with bodyworkers. Massage Therapy Works is not just convenient, but a place I would seek out for this service. No frills, no other services or distractions, just bodywork, of many different types, and well done." - John H. (Cambridge)
#20 {6/1/2009} "I've had many a massage...from San Diego to Chicago to Boston, from student massage clinics to high end spas. I have had a ton of good massages and a few great ones. But tonight I had THE best massage ever - because it wasn't just the massage...it was the explanation, the recommendations, feedback, and quality time spent on fixing my aching bones. I felt truly rejuvenated and I was given techniques to continue my bliss. The cost is reasonable, especially when their techniques are restorative and curative rather than a temporary solution. Richard is amazing, but I was impressed with everyone I met. This is a DO NOT MISS!" - Alison C. (Cambridge)
#19 {5/29/2009} "I've had a number of massages in the past but nothing that even comes close to my experience with Boris at MTW. I was referred by a friend who suggested using him because of the issues I have with my back, poor flexibility and chronic lower back pain. I've seen chiropractors and physical therapists over the years with limited success. So I thought why not. I was impressed with Boris's online profile, not what I typically would expect from a therapist, a lot of varied training and experience. I made an appointment and realized this would be different. He spent time talking about my issues and I felt more like I was being treated by someone with medical experience rather than a masseuse. He used a combination of different treatments, deep tissue and some other things he explained but I don't remember and really got me stretched and much more limber than I've felt in a long time. I really feel like he listened and then planed a custom approach to my issues. After the session he gave me some follow up exercises that I've been using. The best 90 minutes I've had in a long time. I'll be back." -Alan W. (Boston)
#18 {5/9/2009} "If you need to relieve chronic pain and stress, make a pit stop here. As a public school teacher I experience my fair share of physical stress. I went to MTW about a month ago after having multiple sleepless nights due to what I thought was one knot in my back. Turns out it was five. My masseuse, Andrea, was thorough and asked lots of questions about my daily life, giving me accessible and tailored instructions to rectify the damage stress has done to my body. I went for my second visit this morning, which was super successful. This truly is the best kind of therapy. The service is fantastic, the atmosphere is relaxing, and I've received two of the most effective massages of my life. Worth every penny!!!" - Jackie C. (Somerville)
#17 {5/5/2009} "This is the place to go if you are suffering from any sort of pain in your body. It is also the place to go if you are suffering from anxiety or stress. Richard is a true healer and a generous, ethical business man. He will guide you to the right treatment and is exceptional at offering the most therapeutic experience possible. Highly recommended." - Kathleen V. (Woburn)
#16 {5/2/2009} "You got pain? Go to Massage Therapy Works in Davis Sq. I came to MTW because I had intense pain in my left jaw and right neck. My left hips were also hurting me. My treatment with Bob Nemeth today was superb! His approach. which he called Cranial Sacral, provided me with immediate relief and a sense of complete balance. I am free of pain now and feel better than I have felt for a long time. I highly recommend this highly skilled therapist - body worker for anyone who has muscle pain! The place was great and beautifully decorated with a nice calming atmosphere. In spite of how busy it was, everyone was cordial and helped me feel welcome. PS. Reasonable prices too! - Corinne V. (Swampscott)
#15 {5/1/2009} "I don't get massages very often, and when I do I'm not necessarily loyal to one place or therapist -- often I'm looking for an appointment that day, so I take what I can get. Every time I go to Massage Therapy Works, no matter which therapist I see, I have a good experience.
Most recently I saw Kris, who really helped me with soreness and weakness I was having in my arm due to repetitive strain injury. It felt noticeably better and stronger after just one half-hour session." - Martha S. (Somerville)
#14 {4/19/2009} "I bought a 90 minute couples instructional massage as a birthday present for my girlfriend. She is always begging me for a massage but I have always declined because I really had no idea about how to give her one. After recently finishing our session with Kris I cannot wait to go get/receive a massage!
Kris was fantastic at not only making my girlfriend and I comfortable but she tailored the session to what area of the body we wanted to learn about. She taught my girlfriend lower back techniques while I learned upper back and neck. It almost seemed like we received two sessions for the price of one because we can now teach each other what we learned from Kris and combine them into a full massage!
I can't wait to master what I have learned today and I am anticipating coming back to learn advanced techniques later on from Kris.
The office is decorated very tastefully and has a really warm and positve energy about it. I honestly didn't think I was gonna to learn as much as I did today and would have happily paid more for what I received.
I invite anyone who considers themselves a beginner in massage to try out a 90 minute session with Kris. You will not be disappointed and will make your partner very happy!" - Jay G. (No. Providence RI)
#13 {4/9/2009} "I like to indulge in a good massage when I've got some extra dough in my wallet. Sometimes it's about being pampered and other times it's about a recurrent hip and neck pain. (One of my legs is ever so slightly shorter than the other. I should probably wear some sort of special shoe, but I'm too vain.) If you have a serious ailment, I'd suggest Massage Therapy Works in Davis Sq. I went in there when I was working 55 hours a week in retail and had thrown my body into overdrive for too long. Richard met with me and suggested craniosacral therapy. I had never heard of this type of bodywork and was hesitant but it was amazing. It put me in an almost meditative state. I didn't need a massage or a chiropractic adjustment for a good long while after that. I would highly suggest this type of body therapy and Richard is really knowledgeable. I've heard good things about other folks that work there too." - Heather E. (Somerville)
#12 "Bob is a fantastic therapist! I enthusiastically and whole-heartedly recommend him. Bob came highly recommended to me when I was experiencing a bout of debilitating back pain. I had tried acupuncture and massage at another clinic and neither helped. When I came to Bob I was very skeptical that massage could help. But one session of Integrative Bodywork and I felt significantly better. After three sessions I was fully functional again and pain-free! Bob is a miracle-worker. Rejoice that you have found him." - E. Hudson, professor at Harvard
#11 {4/3/2009} "I've been to many masseuses over the years and even did a bit of massage training myself many years ago, so I feel qualified to say that Richard Green (the owner) is a wonderful masseuse. MTW offers many different types of massage (or "bodywork," as the more inclusive term has it) and the one other masseuse I've been to here (Bob) was also great. First rate." - Jamie M. (Boston)
#10 {4/1/2009} "A massage is only as good as the masseuse. Massage Therapy Works is a fine facility, but more importantly Kris is a wondeful masseuse. She has a background in orthopedics, I believe, which helps give her an innate understanding of where to find the muscle strain and fatigue. Her integrative massage therapy technique is soothing and healing. In years past I have found other fine masseues at Massage Therapy Works. However, Kris is the best."
#9 {4/1/2009} "I've been looking all over Boston for a massage therapist that can get deep into my tight muscles and I've finally found the right guy...Richard! Massage Therapy Works is a great relief to me after my long days in front of the computer. ...and I suppose it's a treat for my wife too who thinks I'm much more chill after I've had a massage. Great atmosphere, good people, and conveniently located right off the red line. Richard also told me they often run specials that can save you some cash." - Mike G. (Malden)
#8 {3/24/2009} "Looking for a fantastic massage? Go here. MTW is housed with real professional therapists with an array of knowledge and skills. If you want a quality relaxation massage, that's an easy guarantee. If you want to address pain, discomfort, or injury, then I'm quite confident that you'll find the right therapist to help set you right.
I was referred to Massage Therapy Works in January by my wife, who is a massage therapist (though not here) and instructor. She was 3-for-3 with fantastic treatments from Richard, Kris and Krista. She recommended that I see Richard for a debilitating sports injury that had been bothering me for 7+ years. My body responded so favorably after the first treatment that I bought a 4-pack of massages. Today, after my sixth massage from Richard, I can report significant improvements in pain reduction and mobility. In addition to the great work that Richard has performed, he has also shared his knowledge of the body, which has helped me better understand my pain and how to heal. I would personally recommend him to anyone with chronic pain/discomfort." - Kyle S. (Arlington)
#7 "I have been getting therapeutic massages at Massage Therapy Works now for 3 years. I have had chronic neck and shoulder pain/spasm, and the massages I have had with Richard and Bob have been the best I have ever had. They are serious, committed to their craft, and physically strong. I also had massages during my pregnancy for back pain, and these were also excellent and very helpful. This is the place to go to if you want some real pain relief, and someone who really knows what they are doing!" - S. Tait, MD
#6 "As an amateur boxer looking to turn pro, I often find myself pushing my body a lot harder that an average person does. Not only victory but also my safety in the ring depends on my ability to shift position quickly, have full range of movement and rely on explosive muscle power. Although it would seem that my arms are doing most of the work, it is really my hips, legs and lower back that create the speed and power and allow me to get out of the way and slip punches. Between constant punching, heavy weight lifting and running between 15-20 miles a week, I used to find myself with very sore neck, tight back and shoulders and hamstrings. One thing that really is priceless about Richard's services is the amount of time he took to learn about boxing and repetitive motions my body goes through. His massage treatment is very customized towards my personal needs and the type of injuries my body is exposed to. Secondarily, he has taken his time to teach me how the body works and teach me proper stretching techniques which allows me to minimize muscle strains and actually lower the amount of time and money I have to spend dealing with aches and pains. Most importantly, Richard has always been available for emergencies. Sometimes tough training for a fight and the stress of it makes my body more prone to injuries and there have been few times I found myself couple days away from the competition and with a major back or neck pain. Richard's willingness to accommodate me on a short notice has made it possible for me to go through with competition and win. He has become an invisible second in my corner and having a "clearance" from him has given me the necessary confidence to push myself to top performance." - A. Magdziak (Quincy)
#5 "In 2007, I experienced a most severe injury to the muscles in my head, neck and back, head structure, nerves in my head, neck and back. The result of the fall was extreme shock to my body with nausea, and extreme pain of muscle spasms and nerve pain that sent spikes of pain from my shoulder through my neck and to the top of my head. The pain became intolerable with sleep deprivation and no relief. And then I met Richard Green from Massage Therapy Works! Richard is an intuitive, sensitive individual who is dedicated to the facilitating of the healing of each person. Richard, from the beginning, began to search and discover the fascia muscles of the face, head, neck and back area that were causing the excruciating nerve and muscle pain, causing me weakness, nausea, lack of energy and sleep, and the inability to cope with the pain of extreme proportions. He worked with the bone structure of the head as the accident’s blunt force had contributed to maladjustments of the head skull structure. Richard said my head bone structure and muscles were likened to a puzzle or road map. Each time he worked with them he had to find a way to work through all the stops that they presented to be able to release these areas from trauma. Richard devoted hours of intuitive manipulation and through his dedication I was slowly breaking through layers of muscle and pain trauma that had been rigid and stuck for 3 months. Richard researched and located a Network Chiropractor. With the continued work from both Richard and the chiropractor the muscles slowly began to relax more and more and some nerve pain was beginning to subside. My case presented a very unusual scenario and was always a challenge. Richard remained dedicated and at each session he had to work many different ways to release tension of the muscles. His intuitions and methods were the enormous player in my healing. He always assured me that what I was experiencing was just temporary and that a release would occur. This always gave me hope. The extensive treatment sessions were successful. The nerve impulses subsided in the neck and head, muscle and bone structure in the face relaxed to normalcy and the back muscles relaxed. I with the most sincere gratefulness express my thanks to Richard. He was a faithful facilitator to my healing by his intuitive determination that I should heal. His dedication to his work and clients goes beyond all expectations. The motto they use is “We Take Muscles To The Heart”. I truly know and feel that Richard gave me back my life. I am ever in gratitude. From my heart, THANK YOU!! - M. Greiner (Michigan)
#4 "Richard's wisdom of the human body goes beyond that which he has cultivated through education; his is a gift of intuition. The combination of the two ensures for a transformative experience for anyone he treats."
There are two things that set Richard apart from other therapists I have seen. The first is the energetic or tone of safety that permeates his space. Security and serenity are the first emotions one experiences upon entering. The second is his ability to teach his clients how to avoid future injury. His insight has shown me how everyday actions such as standing and walking were contributing to the tension I was experiencing in the rest of my body. After each session I not only left repaired, but confident that I had the tools to maintain this new body as I moved about in the rest of my life.
I have recommended several of my students and family members to Richard. All are active individuals who experience chronic pain of one kind or another. Each of them has returned from their time with him expressing huge shifts in their bodies, feeling released from their pain and more aware of how to prevent it from returning.
My personal journey echoes theirs and includes energetic shifts in addition to the physical – though in my profession many believe the two go hand-in-hand. I would recommend Richard to anyone, from she who is looking for a relaxation massage to the professional athlete dealing with acute injury. You are lucky to have found him!" - M. Eisenberg, RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher)
#3 "For over a year, I had been planning a 6 day hike up to the highest peak in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, determined to achieve my long held dream of reaching the summit. A bicycling injury had left me with pain in my right knee that made hiking on hilly terrain very difficult. In July of 2008, I ran across online recommendations for Massage Therapy Works via Yelp, and carefully read the therapist bio sketches provided online. I chose to see Richard Green, made an appointment using the web site scheduler, and have been very happy with my treatment. He took the time to assess my current condition to listen to my goals and proceeded to get me ready for my climb. On September 19, 2008, I reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and I honestly would not have been able to do it without his work. His skill, care, and professionalism helped me through the discomfort I experienced in working out the aftermath of my injury and I was able to focus on my vacation rather than worrying about the reoccurrence of knee pain." - Nicole A. (Belmont)
#2 "I wholeheartedly recommend Massage Therapy Works.
It is such a relief to know that there are people out there who
understand the intercon-nected nature of the human body, and know how
to use a wide variety of techniques not just to soothe pain but to deal
with its source. I have come to Massage Therapy Works for three different injuries over the years, and each time Richard Green
has managed to find the source my misery. Thank you, Richard! I am so
happy to report that after our third session yesterday, I have NO PAIN
today--and that is something I haven't been able to say that for a
month. ps: can I say that again? NO PAIN!!!!!"
- M. Glenn Haber (Somerville)
#1 "Richard Green is a masterful healer. Throughout the last 14 years I have turned to Richard
for help with soft tissue injuries, bouts of anxiety and depression,
and the occasional pampering session. His understanding of body
mechanics combined with mind-body connections allows him to get right
to the heart of what ails you. Thanks to Richard, I am aging
with minimal aches and pains and an ever- increasing understanding of
what my mind, body and spirit need to flourish. I have sent countless
friends and acquaintances to Richard and have heard nothing but positive reports. In my opinion Richard and his staff at Massage Therapy Works are one of the area’s greatest wellness resources." -D. Irving (Cambridge)
